Ayia Napa: beaches and nightlife
Ayia Napa lies about 40 km east of Larnaca, a drive of around 45 minutes along the coastal road through Sotira. It is the busiest beach town on the island, built around Nissi Beach's white sand and shallow turquoise water, with a harbour, a monastery square at its centre, and a nightlife strip that fills up long after the beach empties out.
A day trip here suits visitors who want sun and sand more than sightseeing. Nicosia: the divided capital

It is the last divided capital in Europe: the Green Line, a UN-patrolled buffer zone, has separated the Republic of Cyprus from the Turkish-administered north since 1974, and it cuts straight through the old walled city.
Ledra Street, the main pedestrian shopping street, runs right up to a crossing point in that old town, and walking up to it is usually the centrepiece of a Nicosia day trip, alongside the Venetian walls and the museums inside them. The motorway drive itself is easy and well signed. What takes visitors by surprise is the city, not the road: a capital split by a border most people did not expect to see up close.
Limassol: marina and old town
Limassol is about 65 km west of Larnaca, around 55 minutes on the A1 motorway, the most consistently fast of the three drives since it runs on motorway almost the entire way. It is Cyprus's second-largest city, built around a working marina lined with restaurants and yachts, with an old town behind it and a medieval castle at its edge.
Limassol rewards a slower day trip more than the other two: the marina and old town are made for wandering rather than ticking off, and many visitors end up staying longer than planned. Being the furthest of the three, it is also the one to start earliest if you want a full day there and back within daylight.
